How the VA Combined Ratings Formula Works

The VA does not simply add your disability percentages together. Instead, each rating is applied to your remaining "whole person" — the part not already considered disabled.

Combined = 1 − ((1−r₁) × (1−r₂) × … × (1−rₙ))

Example: 70% PTSD + 30% back + 10% tinnitus:

1 − ((1−0.70) × (1−0.30) × (1−0.10))
= 1 − (0.30 × 0.70 × 0.90)
= 1 − 0.189 = 0.811 → 81% → rounds to 80%

The VA rounds the raw combined percentage to the nearest 10%, with values ending in 5 rounding up. So 75% rounds to 80%, and 74% rounds to 70%.

This calculator provides estimates only. Official VA disability ratings are determined by the VA based on medical evidence and service records. Compensation amounts may vary based on additional factors including bilateral factor, special monthly compensation, TDIU, and Aid & Attendance. Consult with an accredited VA claims agent or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) for official guidance.
